Preparing a wish list

Dream first. Edit later.

A wish list is your life, written down.

Your consultant’s job is to fit as much of your list as possible within your land and budget - and to tell you honestly what should wait. But first the list has to exist.

Prompts

What belongs on a wish list

  1. i

    The non-negotiables

Bedrooms, work-from-home spaces, accessibility, the garage, the pantry that ends all pantry arguments.

  2. ii

    The rituals

Where you cook, gather, retreat, entertain. The barbecue. The chessboard. Morning coffee in the sun. Designated places make rituals happen.

  3. iii

    Something for everyone

One of Ralph’s ten principles: a space for each person’s thing - a workshop, a play corner, a reading nook, a make-up bench.

  4. iv

    The never-agains

The dark hallway, the airless kitchen, the storage that never existed. Naming what failed you before is half the brief.

  5. v

    The honest budget

Shared early, it becomes a design tool. Storybook designs to it creatively rather than surprising you at the end.
